NEW YORK: Foreign Minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi has said that Pakistan is trying to reconnect with the United States, its old ally, as Washington’s priorities have changed in the region where it has forged a strategic relationship with India.

“You can have new friends, but why to lose old friends,” he posed the question at a large gathering of American academics, analysts, international affairs students and journalists at Asia Society in New York.

The foreign minister said Pakistan wanted peace in the region, but on the other hand, India was trying to escape from a dialogue. The US, he added, could play a role in resolving the outstanding disputes between India and Pakistan.

Qureshi also said Pakistan wanted to play a positive role in Afghanistan, but that Afghanistan was not the only responsibility of it.

Responding to question about the state of US-Pakistan relations, he said, “I’m here to reconnect.”

He said he was meeting US Secretary of State Michael Pompeo in Washington on October 2, pointing out that the decision to hold these follow-up talks was taken during the US top diplomat’s visit to Islamabad earlier this month.

During Pompeo’s visit to Pakistan, he said there was a good exchange of views between the two sides on matters of mutual concern. Pompeo interacted with the country’s civil and military leadership and found them on the same page.

Noting that US priorities had changed and that it had a new friend in the region — India, he said, adding “But please understand the value of long-standing friendship with Pakistan.”

“Pakistan and the US can’t do without each other. Have new ones but why loose old friends?,” the minister added.

“We need to see how to manage this new relationship [with the US] and expectations.”

Qureshi stressed the need for strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries, and not just connect with each other over Afghanistan. Currently, he remarked, adding “The road to Washington is via Kabul.”

The foreign minister discussed at length Pakistan’s relations with its neighbours, Afghanistan and India, ties with the US, and the country’s relationship with China, as well as its role in President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative.

ISLAMABAD: Chinese Ambassador to Pakistan Yao Jing has said China remained committed to strategic partnership with Pakistan and had developed very good coordination with the new PTI government.

He was speaking at a gathering of politicians, diplomats, top civil and military officials and elite of the city here at the Embassy of China to celebrate the 69th anniversary of the founding of People’s Republic of China.

He said both the countries had reiterated their firm commitment for cooperation on the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).

Describing it vital for the development and prosperity of the two countries, Ambassador Yao Jing said joint ventures and development projects would boost socio-economic development in Pakistan.

He said both Pakistan and China could learn, stand and care for each other, adding, China stood for peace and shared prosperity.

He said China had emerged as the second largest economy in the world, and was contributing 30 percent to global economic growth.

Chairman Senate Sadiq Sanjrani, who was chief guest of the event, said Pakistan valued its relations with China as it was the cornerstone of its foreign policy.

He said their bilateral ties were unique and strong enough to have any impact from the political transitions. He said the new government would further strengthen its multifaceted bilateral ties with China.

He was appreciative of the strong support of China to Pakistan on issues of vital importance and added that Pakistan too stood by the One China policy.

He was appreciative of President Xi Jinping’s Belt and Road Initiative and CPEC and said those were the key to future prosperity and progress of the two brotherly nations.

The prominent attendees included; Deputy Chairman Senate Saleem Mandwiwala, Deputy Speaker National Assembly Qasim Suri, Minister for Information and Broadcasting Chaudhry Fawad Hussain, Minister for Energy Umar Ayub, former Prime Minister Syed Yousaf Raza Gilani, ex-Chief Minister Punjab Shehbaz Sharif,  former federal ministers, leaders of religio-political parties.

The guests were entertained to a musical evening, interspersed with traditional Chinese dances and lilting music, in the lawns of the embassy, decorated with lights. Traditional Chinese cuisines were served.

SEOUL: An official at the South Korean Embassy in Malaysia has been given a jail sentence for issuing fraudulent visas to Pakistanis.

The Seoul Central District Court on Friday said it had sentenced the embassy official to 18 months in prison for falsifying official documents and violating the immigration law, according to the Korean Herald.

The embassy official use to assist the consul in charge of visas and was found to have issued fraudulent visas to Pakistanis who lacked the required documents on 20 occasions over a period of three years.

The report further said that the embassy official was found to have misused the consul’s intranet ID and password.

In his ruling, the judge said the official had betrayed the trust bestowed upon him for the execution of his public duties and had caused confusion in immigration affairs. Therefore, he concluded, a strong punishment was necessary.

The judge added, however, that he had taken into consideration the fact that the official had not gained anything personally as a result of his crimes and that he had admitted them and expressed remorse.

NEW DELHI: Indian Army Chief General Bipin Rawat says that the situation at the border with Pakistan won’t improve unless the Pakistan government takes necessary measures.

Speaking to an Indian TV channel, the army chief said India needs to launch another surgical strike against terrorists.

“As long as the Pakistan government can’t take measures, the situation at the border won’t improve,” General Rawat said.

Pakistan Army’s spokesman Major General Asif Ghafoor on Saturday responded to Bipin Rawat’s threatening statement,  saying that the country’s soldiers are ready to give a befitting reply to Indian misadventures.

“Pakistan is a nuclear-armed country and is ready to respond to Indian misadventures,” Director General Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) Major General Asif Ghafoor said in a statement.

The DG ISPR said that Pakistan has made it clear that it wants talks and peace in the region but it is India which runs away from talks each time. Terming the Indian COAS’s statement “irresponsible”, Asif Ghafoor said that his statement is aimed at sabotaging Pakistan’s efforts for peace in the region.

The Indian government called off a meeting that was to be held between the foreign ministers of India and Pakistan on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York.

Prime Minister Imran Khan proposed the meeting. He said he was disappointed by India’s decision, and described the response as “arrogant” and “negative”.

واشنگٹن میں پریس کانفرنس کرتے ہوئے شاہ محمود قریشی نے کہا کہ حکومت نے خطے کی ترقی کے لیے بھارت سے مذاکرات کی کوشش کی، دیکھنا ہوگا امن کی بات کون کر رہا ہے اور کون فرار کے راستے پر ہے۔

انھوں نے کہا بھارت نے ملاقات پر آمادگی ظاہر کی تھی، لیکن پھر اپنے اندرونی معاملات سے توجہ ہٹانے کے لیے ایسی صورتِ حال پیدا کی گئی، بھارتی رویہ سفارتی آداب کے منافی ہے، بھارت انسانیت کا ماحول بہتر کرنے سے کترا رہا ہے۔

وزیرِ خارجہ نے کہا کہ سعودی ولیٔ عہد سے نیو یارک میں ملاقات ہوگی، اکتوبر میں سعودی عرب اور یو اے ای حکام انویسٹمنٹ کا جائزہ لینے پاکستان آئیں گے، ہم سایہ ممالک سے بہتر تعلقات پاکستان کی پالیسی ہے۔

شاہ محمود نے بھارت کی طرف امریکی جھکاؤ پر کہا کہ امریکا خطے میں بھارت کو اسٹریٹیجک پارٹنر بنانے کی خواہش رکھتا ہے، جب کہ اسے ہمیشہ پاکستان سے تعلقات میں فائدہ ہوا، ہمیں امریکا سے تعلقات کو مینیج کرنا ہے، بھارت گھبراتا ہے، ہم نہیں گھبرائیں گے۔

انھوں نے کہا کہ بھارت نے مذاکرات کی دعوت پر دہشت گردی کا راگ الاپا، مقبوضہ کشمیر میں لاکھوں نہتے لوگ حق خود ارادیت کی آواز بلند کر رہے ہیں، کشمیر کے معاملے پر بھارت یو این قرارداد آنکھیں چرا رہا ہے، بھارت میں دانشور کہہ رہے ہیں کہ ان کی کشمیر پالیسی نا کام ہو چکی ہے، بھارت کو اپنے گریبان میں جھانکنا چاہیے۔

وزیرِ خارجہ نے کہا ’امریکا جو کہتا ہے کہے ہم سنیں گے لیکن امریکا کے پابند نہیں، پاکستان کی ترجیحات، مفادات اور ضروریات مدِ نظر رکھیں گے۔

انھوں نے کہا ’ہم چاہتے ہیں افغانستان میں جو بیٹھے ہیں وہ ہتھیار پھینک کر میز پر بیٹھیں، حکمران بھی اپنی سوچ پر نظرِ ثانی کریں، ہتھیار اٹھانے والے بھی افغان ہی ہیں۔

وزیر خارجہ شاہ محمود قریشی نے کہا ہے کہ بھارت 27ستمبر کو وزرائے خارجہ ملاقات پر راضی ہواتھا،آمادگی کے بعد ملاقات منسوخی سمجھ سے بالاتر ہے۔

واشنگٹن میں پریس کانفرنس کرتے ہوئے شاہ محمود قریشی کا کہنا تھا کہ بھارتی وزیرخارجہ سےتعلقات میں بہتری کے لیے ملاقات کرناچاہتےتھے،ہم نے کوئی ایسی زبان استعمال نہ کی جو سفارتی نہ ہولیکن بھارتی وزارت خار جہ کا رویہ افسوسناک ہے۔

ان کا کہنا تھا کہ سعودی عرب اورعرب امارات سےپاکستان کا اعلیٰ سطح کارابطہ نہیں تھا،ان ممالک کے وزرائے خارجہ کو خطوط لکھے، طےپایا کہ ہم انگیج رہیں گےجبکہ ہم پیسے مانگنے نہیں گئے تھے۔

انہوں نے مزید کہا کہ دورہ سعودی عرب فائدے مند رہا،سعودی ولی عہدسےنیویارک میں سائیڈ لائن ملاقات ہوگی جبکہ عرب امارات کے وزیر خارجہ پاکستان کا دورہ کریں گےتاہم ایرانی وزیر خارجہ سے تعلقات پر تبادلہ خیال ہوا۔

ایران کی وزارت خارجہ کے ترجمان کا کہنا ہے کہ ایران مخالف گروپوں کو دہشت گردوں کی فہرست میں شامل نہ کرنا ناقابل قبول ہے۔ دہشت گرد گروپوں کی حمایت پر ردعمل کا حق محفوظ رکھتے ہیں۔

ایران نے عرب امارات، برطانیہ، ڈنمارک اور ہالینڈ کے مندوبین سے فوجی پریڈ حملے کے بعد احتجاج کیا جو مخالف گروپوں کی حمایت پر ریکارڈ کرایاگیا۔

سینٹ گالن : سوئٹزرلینڈ میں عوام کی بڑی تعداد نے خواتین کے برقع پہننے پر پابندی کے حق میں رائے دی،  جس کے بعد برقع پہننے پر پابندی عائد کردی گئی ہے۔

تفصیلات کے مطابق سوئٹزر لینڈ کی وفاقی ریاست سینٹ گالن میں حکومت نے سیکیورٹی کی صورتحال کے پیش نظر خواتین کے برقع پہننے پر پابندی عائد کرنے کا فیصلہ کیا ہے۔

یہ فیصلہ ایک عوامی ریفرنڈم میں رائے دہندگان کی بہت بڑی اکثریت کی رائے کے بعد کیا گیا، خبررساں ایجنسی کے مطابق ریفرنڈم میں رائے دہندگان سے یہ پوچھا گیا کہ کیا وہ چاہتے ہیں کہ تمام عوامی مقامات پر چہرے کو مکمل طور پر ڈھانپ دینے والے برقعے یا نقاب کے استعمال پر پابندی لگا دی جائے؟

سرکاری نتائج کے مطابق دو تہائی سے زائد رائے دہندگان67فیصد کی سوچ یہ تھی کہ سینٹ گالن میں تمام پبلک مقامات پر مکمل برقعے یا پورے چہرے کے نقاب پر قطعی پابندی لگا دی جائے، اس ریفرنڈم میں ووٹ دینے کے اہل شہریوں کی شرکت کا تناسب صرف 36 فیصد رہا۔  

واضح رہے کہ حجاب، نقاب یا برقع جیسی مختلف شکلوں میں ایسا زیادہ تر مذہبی سوچ کی حامل مسلم خواتین کی طرف سے کیا جاتا ہے، عرف عام میں سینٹ گالن میں اس ریفرنڈم کو برقعے پر پابندی یا ’برقعہ بین‘ کا نام دیا جا رہا تھا۔

ملاقات میں تجارت، سرمایہ کاری اور اقتصادی تعلقات سے متعلق امور پر گفتگو کی گئی، خیال رہے کہ وزیرِ اعظم عمران خان گزشتہ روز سعودی عرب اور متحدہ عرب امارات کے دو روزہ دورے پر گئے ہیں۔

NEW DELHI: The Indian government Wednesday issued an executive order making the Islamic practice of “instant divorce” a criminal offence punishable by up to three years in prison.

The controversial move brings an outright ban on “triple talaq” — when a Muslim man ends his marriage by saying “talaq” (“you are divorced” in Arabic) three times in succession — a step closer.

Muslim women say they have been divorced over messaging apps like WhatsApp or in letters, leaving them without any legal remedy.

India’s lower house, controlled by Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janta Party (BJP), passed legislation outlawing the practice in December.

But it got stuck in the upper house, prompting the government to issue Wednesday’s executive order. It now needs only approval from the president to become law.

“There was a constitutional urgency to bring this law. The curse of triple talaq has continued unabated,” Ravi Shankar Prasad, law and justice minister, told reporters.

In August 2017, India’s Supreme Court declared “triple talaq” unconstitutional and ordered the government to legislate against it.

Prasad said that 201 cases have been reported across the country even after the top court’s order.

The BJP has long pushed for a uniform civil code for marriage, divorce and property. India’s constitution allows followers of each faith to use their religious laws to govern such matters.

But India’s 180-million-strong Muslim community has historically opposed such a move, saying it will erode their religious identity and violate the constitution.

Critics have long accused Modi, who is supported by hardline Hindu nationalists and who is running for re-election in 2019, of demonising Muslims for political ends.

“The BJP’s stand on the Muslim plight is well known and they have little sympathy for the community,” said Yogendra Yadav, an academic and politician who heads the socio-political organisation Swaraj India.

“This issue gives them a nice pretext to present the Muslim community in a poor light and themselves as defender of a retrograde practice,” he said.

R S Surjewala, a spokesman for the opposition Congress party, said that the next step would be to ensure Muslim women get alimony.

“But the Modi government would not want that, they don’t want upliftment of Muslim women,” he told news channels.

ان کا کہنا تھا کہ سدھوکے بہت سے پرستار ہیں اور ایسے میں ان کے پاکستان  جا کر جنرل قمر جاوید باجوہ سے بغل گیر ہونے کے عمل نے ہمارے فوجی اہلکاروں پر اثرات ڈالے ہیں۔

بھارتی وزیردفاع نے کہا کہ ہماری فوج  پاکستان کے حوالے سے ایک خاص انداز میں سوچتی ہے اور اس بات کو مدنظر رکھتے ہوئے سدھو کا پاکستانی آرمی چیف سے ملنا ایک ایسا عمل تھا جس سے عوام کا مورال بھی گرا۔

واشنگٹن : سمندری طوفان ’فلورنس‘ نے امریکا میں تباہی مچانا شروع کردی، طوفان کے باعث مختلف حادثات میں شیر خوار بچے سمیت 6 افراد ہلاک ہوگئے۔

تفصیلات کے مطابق سمندر سے اٹھنے والا خطرناک طوفان ’فلورنس‘ امریکا کے مشرقی ساحل پر اپنی تباہ کاریوں کا آغاز کرتے ہوئے شیرخواربچے سمیت چھ افراد کو جاں بحق کردیا۔ طوفان اور بارش کے باعث ہزاروں گھر اور گلیاں پانی سے بھر چکی ہے جبکہ بجلی بھی منقطع ہے۔

امریکی خبر رساں ادارے کا کہنا تھا کہ فلورنس کی شدت میں کمی کے باوجود طوفان اتنی قوت رکھتا ہے جو بڑے پیمانے پر لوگوں کو ہلاک کرسکتا ہے۔

ماہرین موسمیات کے مطابق سمندری طوفان فلورنس کو ختم ہونے میں کئی دن لگیں گے اور طوفان کے باعث 110 کلومیٹر فی گھنٹہ کی رفتار سے چلنے کا خطرہ ہے۔

LONDON: The British government has rejected a petition which called on Theresa May’s government to deport former finance minister Ishaq Dar to Pakistan from London.

The petition was filed by an activist from the UK around a month ago which was signed by more than 80 thousand internet users making a number of allegations against Dar, but the British government, in a statement, rejected these allegations and made it clear that the petition will not be entertained.

A written statement issued by the petitions team of UK government and parliament said: "We rejected the petition you supported – “Deport absconder Pakistan’s Ex-Finance Minister Ishaq Dar back to Pakistan."

The statement said that the online petition against Dar included "libellous, false or defamatory information," which could not be relied upon to take action against him.

The UK government’s petitions team told the petitioners that the Britain has no formal extradition treaty with Pakistan. “Section 194 of the Extradition Act 2003 does allow special extradition arrangements in exceptional circumstances. However, under current law, an extradition process is initiated at the request of the government of the country in which the individual has been convicted of a crime. It would therefore be the Pakistani government's responsibility to initiate such proceedings."

The petitions committee said it reviewed the online petition after getting 10,000 signatures for its consideration but rejected it on technical and legal grounds.

The committee is set up by the House of Commons. It comprises up to 11 backbench members of parliament from government and opposition parties. The number of committee members from each political party is representative of the membership of the House of Commons as a whole.

Former finance minister Dar presently resides in UK without a passport after his diplomatic passport was cancelled. It is pertinent to mention here that the Supreme Court of Pakistan has called on the Government of Pakistan to bring back Dar for the cases which are under trial in the apex court.

The petition had alleged that "Dar has been declared an absconder in a corruption reference filed against him by the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) of Pakistan” and “every year hundreds of children die of hunger in the country and these corrupt politicians make millions in corruption and leave the country to hide elsewhere, mostly in the UK” and therefore “they must be deported to Pakistan so that they can be held accountable.”

Dar has been stateless after Pakistan’s federal government cancelled his diplomatic passport. The cancellation of the passport means that the former minister is in London without a travel document and unable to travel to Pakistan.

He arrived in the UK last year in November to seek medical treatment and remains under treatment of London Neurosurgery Partnership at Harley Street.

Prakash Bilhore, a promising student, was just 16 when he died in July 2015 in Mumbai, India´s hectic financial and Bollywood capital of 20 million people.

To help deal with his grief, Prakash´s devastated father Dadarao decided he would do something about Mumbai´s roads, which like much of India´s, are notoriously shoddy.

Using sand and gravel collected from building sites, Bilhore has filled in almost 600 potholes across India´s financial capital in the past three years.

The 48-year-old vegetable vendor does it to pay tribute to his beloved son and in the hope that it will save lives.

"Prakash´s sudden death left a huge void in our lives. I do this work to remember and honour him.

"I also don´t want anyone else to lose a loved one like we have," Bilhore tells AFP at the modest apartment he shares with his wife, daughter and extended family.

Prakash Bilhore was travelling pillion when the motorbike he was on with his cousin hit a deep pothole, sending them both flying through the air.

Prakash, who wasn´t wearing a helmet, suffered fatal brain damage. His cousin, who was wearing a helmet, walked away with minor injuries.

The tragic accident occurred during Mumbai´s summer monsoon when heavy rains are blamed for causing crater-like holes on the teeming coastal city´s roads.

Potholes are so common that a campaign is under way to have Mumbai featured in the Guinness Book of Records as the city with the most potholes.

Navin Lade, a resident, claims to have recorded more than 27,000 holes on the website www.mumbaipotholes.com, although local officials dispute his findings.
