Teachers’ Day

October 04, 2018 0
World Teachers’ Day is observed annually on October 5. There is no denying the fact that teachers play a vital role in the growth of a nation. The entire system of education of any nation is heavily reliant on teachers and it crumbles like a house of cards if teachers fail to deliver. The profession of teaching is totally different from other professions because teachers have to groom and train the future generations of a nation. Teachers are the agents of change. They are a source of inspiration for their students. It is regrettable that in our country the teaching profession is considered a low-profile job. At present, teachers have been subjected to various types of administrative and political persecutions. Some are even unable to avail their annual leaves. Instead of issuing token statements on this day, the relevant authorities should try to do something concrete to ameliorate the concerns of teachers.Muhammad FayyazMianwali

Don’t neglect mental health

October 04, 2018 0
It was heartrending to know that two singers of Balochistan committed suicide after struggling with depression. The young singers stressed over the sale of their song albums. It should be mention that there has been an acute rise in suicide cases. This is because there is no government-backed facility in the country which can help people have good mental health. The number of psychiatrists in Pakistan is in hundreds. The healthcare authorities have to look into this matter. Medical health facilities should be established and free-of-cost counseling sessions should be provided to people who are under any kind of stress or are dealing with mental depression.Irshad HameedWashuk

Dark and lovely

October 04, 2018 0
Our society’s obsession with fair skin tone is ineffable. This obsession has helped the cosmetic industry to make billions out of it. Skin whitening creams remain in demand across the country. People spend a large amount of money on such creams to ‘treat’ their skin. Many well-known celebrities also endorse these skin whitening creams. The sad point is that the commercials for such products present a ridiculous narrative that only a fair-skinned woman will be successful in her life. This flawed thinking has negative effects on young girls. This bias is actually an offshoot of racism which is deeply entrenched in our society. We need to fight against this mindset.Aqsa SohailRawalpindi

They do no harm

October 04, 2018 0
There has been an unprecedented increase in the incidents of violence against doctors in government hospitals. Most cases occur when a single doctor is on call or in the ward at night and is outnumbered by aggressive attendants of patients. This leads to unwanted situations. I have also been a victim of assault and was helpless in front of the mob who won’t even listen to me or try to understand how things work. They blame the doctors for their patients’ serious condition, and curse and criticise doctors who treats patients with utmost care. The working environment is stressful for a young doctor in the overly crowded, tertiary care hospitals and long duty hours further add to their woes. Moreover, if doctors have been negligent, a complaint against them should be submitted to the relevant authorities. This culture of beating or threatening doctors should be condemned. The PTI government should take some serious measures regarding the security of doctors working under duress in the already overburdened public hospitals. Also the electronic and print media, instead of tarnishing the image of doctors should portray their positive image to society clearing the gross misconceptions about them.Dr Saad RiazMardan

Drought in Thar

October 04, 2018 0
All water reservoirs have dried up due to lack of rain in Thar. The drought-hit area is witnessing a large number of deaths on a daily basis. Many animals are also dying of starvation. While some people are leaving their houses and migrating to nearby areas to survive, thousands of families who are unable to move out are waiting for the authorities’ help. The Sindh government must take serious steps to alleviate the suffering of people of Thar.Khalil Ahmed SharIslamabad*****While the government’s decision to send wheat to Afghanistan is a good decision, it is pitiful that the authorities concerned have failed to provide aid to thousands of people, including children, who are starving in Thar. That the government has not taken effective steps to tackle the plight of the people of Thar is condemnable. The chief justice of Pakistan has also completely ignored this serious situation. The people of Thar are already finding it hard to survive with scarce resources. Under such circumstances, the government should take urgent measures to provide much-needed relief to the affected people. The chief justice should also order the authorities concerned to take immediate action.Kaleem MalakHyderabad

Energy conservation

October 04, 2018 0
Despite the previous government’s claims that it has achieved the desired level of electricity generation, uninterrupted supply of electricity is still a dream. While electricity is available in posh and elite areas, far flung and remote areas are still deprived of electricity. The new government claims to provide electricity to the areas where power theft is negligible. The amount of electricity which is stolen only increases the loss on the national exchequer and add burden to consumers.Since the PTI-led government has introduced austerity drives, it should also come up with a plan for electricity conservation. In Pakistan, shops and markets remain opened until midnight. The government should allow shops to open until 7pm on weekdays and 10pm on weekend. This step will not only reduce the overall electricity consumption, but will also avoid unnecessary increase in circular debt.Sohail ZafarRawalpindi

Not a doctor

October 04, 2018 0
Tribal Areas (formerly called Fata), the home to a population of roughly 3.18 million people, witnessed the devastating effects of the war on terror which didn’t only claim the lives of thousands of civilians, but also destroyed the region’s infrastructure. A number of hospitals were destroyed during prolong militancy in Fata and the availability of physicians remained limited to agency headquarters hospitals (AHQ). As a result, many quacks centres were established across the area. People from far flung areas used to visit these medical facilities run by underqualified professionals. Incidents of negligence occur every year, but, unfortunately, remain unreported. This menace has led to the outbreak of Hepatitis B and C due to intake of substandard medicines advised by the quacks. Now as the tribal areas have been merged to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, the provincial government must take action against quackery clinics in tribal areas. The provincial government should also ensure best healthcare facilities in the local hospitals in the affected areas. It is necessary to provide awareness in the schools and community as a whole so that the people may avoid quacks and report to the authorities concerned.Shah FahadLandi Kotal

No light

October 04, 2018 0
The KE authorities should explain why there is a surge in unscheduled loadshedding across the city. For the last two days, the power has been going out at odd hours during night. When the power is restored, we suffer from the problem of low voltage. The authorities concerned should take issue of this problem. It is our right to have access to uninterrupted power supply.Ghulam MoinKarachi

Policies don’t change

October 04, 2018 0
The government changes but the policies remain the same. The formal PML-N-led government maintained a balanced relationship with both Iran and Saudi Arabia. And that neutrality should remain forever. It is true that Saudi Arabia has differences with Iran. However, while making deals and urging Saudi Arabia to participate in Pakistan’s venture, the newly elected government must not ignore Iran. Pakistan may get economic assistance from Saudi Arabia, but not at the cost of the country’s relationship with Iran. Pakistan should remain neutral.Mujtaba HaiderIslamabad

Digital attendance

October 04, 2018 0
The University of Sindh has launched biometric attendance system for employees across all campuses except its main campus. It is an excellent initiative taken by the varsity as it will help monitor the attendance of employees. It is believed that this technology will diminish employees’ absenteeism. However, the university must introduce this new system in its main Jamshoro campus.Imtiaz JunejoHyderabad

Good decision

October 04, 2018 0
The PTI-led government has finally imposed the ban on purchase of property and car by non-filers. It was indeed good to know that the newly elected government is taken steps for the promotion of the documented economy. The PML-N took a laudable step when it proposed this restriction in the last budget. Now, the authorities concerned should introduce an easy-to-access tutorial to educate people how to file their returns. The main issue is that many people are paying taxes (in form of withholding tax) but are unable to submit their tax certificates to the FBR. The government should ask the FBR to provide round-the-clock assistance to people so that they can file returns conveniently.Hajra ZaidiKarachi
