Netflix’s ambitious designs

October 04, 2018 0
The Academy Awards as well as some filmmakers can continue to debate whether releasing content on Netflix is a good idea or a bad one but the streaming giant doesn’t seem to care too much. Among latest announcements is the fact that ABC original series, Designated Survivor, is set to return with its third season, after moving on from Hulu to Netflix. The political drama starring Kiefer Sutherland hasn’t had the best luck but has enough. However, that could change with Netflix taking on a role and with ABC no longer involved. According to Deadline, “The third season of the series, which stars Kiefer Sutherland, will have a new showrunner Neal Baer (Law & Order: SVU). The core cast of the series, including Sutherland, Kal Penn, Adan Canto and Italia Ricci are set to return, with Maggie Q in talks to join them. Production on Season 3 is set to begin later this year for a 2019 premiere.”That’s not all the streaming platform has been up to since it closed a “a multi-year deal with The C.S. Lewis Company to develop new series and film projects based on Lewis’ popular The Chronicles of Narnia books,” noted Deadline. The publication added: “The deal marks the first time that rights to the entire seven books of the Narnia universe have been held by the same company.”Ted Sarandos, Chief Content Officer, Netflix, said on the subject, “C.S. Lewis’ beloved Chronicles of Narnia stories have resonated with generations of readers around the world. Families have fallen in love with characters like Aslan and the entire world of Narnia, and we’re thrilled to be their home for years to come.”“It is wonderful to know that folks from all over are looking forward to seeing more of Narnia, and that the advances in production and distribution technology have made it possible for us to make Narnian adventures come to life all over the world,” said Douglas Gresham, stepson of C.S. Lewis. “Netflix seems to be the very best medium with which to achieve this aim, and I am looking forward to working with them towards this goal.”The real goal, it seems, for Netflix is to create a cross-over film/TV universe akin to Marvel and Star Trek. It is also interesting to note that just when Amazon closed the deal and has ordered a prolific Lord of the Rings TV series in a mega deal with the J.R.R. Tolkien estate, Netflix has struck one with C.S. Lewis estate. As for the rest of it, according to a report in Bloomberg, the streaming platform is working on ways to roll out interactive “features on shows including Black Mirror that will enable viewers to choose their own endings.”Added Deadline: “While plenty of reality series have incorporated interactive elements for years now, the scripted realm faces hurdles to wider deployment of choose-your-own-ending storytelling. In addition to the technology requirements, it requires more extensive scripts and produced scenes. That can present budget and labor challenges for producers.”– With information from Deadline

Sui Dhaaga is a socially driven film

October 04, 2018 0
In the last couple of years, the Hindi film industry witnessed some major lapses with more films following the trend and less films breaking away from the norm. Given the popularity and business that formula films generate, Bollywood continues to produce them and their importance may never fade. However, films that attempted to experiment with subjects that deserved attention did manage to bag critical as well as commercial (not always) acclaim. The significance of diverse content is therefore just as important. Some recent examples include Padman, Toilet Ek Prem Katha, Secret Superstar, Tumhari Sulu, Mom and Badrinath Ki Dulhaniya, among others. The newest example in the league is Varun Dhawan and Anushka Sharma starrer Sui Dhaaga that highlights the struggle of a middle-class household and how the two manage to rise above their circumstances. The film released worldwide on September 28 and raked in over 55 crores in the first five days. A powerful script – though there are bits of exaggeration at some instances, effortless performances and a realistic treatment to the narrative makes Sui Dhaaga a must-watch.As far as the story goes, it is based in a small town in India with a lower middle-class household at heart. The Sharat Katariya directorial opens with Mamta (Anushka Sharma) clad from head to toe in a simple, printed sari catering to the needs/ calls of her mother-in-law. She is married to Mauji – the youngest of two sons, essayed by Varun Dhawan, but the two live more like strangers under one roof. They never have a chance to know each other prior to getting married and, after that, family responsibilities never allow them to come closer.Mauji, who possesses sewing skills like his late grandfather and father, quits his job upon Mamta’s insistence and attempts a start-up in the field. With sheer hard work, consistency and constant support, the two walk the path of life together and this changes their circumstances, their personal equation and the one they share with the rest of the family for the better. With a simple and closer-to-reality story, Sui Dhaaga captures the true essence of life in a small town where the day begins on a happy note if one manages to get two buckets of water, and where earning a penny is the most important thing while chasing one’s dreams is the silliest thought. The film subtly highlights the nitty-gritty of rural life, the sensitivity of relationships, the price of going against the tide and eventually achieving what one strives for.The performances delivered by every single actor, particularly Anushka Sharma, Varun Dhawan and Raghubir Yadav, who played the role of Mauji’s father, are impressive. Sui Dhaaga features Anushka and Varun in unique characters compared to their past films but the two pull off their characters very well. Others who caught our attention include Yamini Das, seen as Mauji’s mother in the film and Namit Das who essays a negative role. The one thing that doesn’t go down too well is the perfect picture of success that the film paints at the end. The ending would have made complete sense even without it. In fact, it would have been more believable and convincing. Also, some instances here and there are a bit exaggerated and the story could have been crisper. Nonetheless, Sui Dhaaga succeeds in presenting a beautiful story that touches one’s heart and encourages one to follow their dreams, without the fear of failure. It rightly emphasizes that the key to success, be it small or huge, is dedication, determination and consistency.
