Previous govts failed to act proactively on Kashmir issue: human rights minister

Kashmir

ISLAMBAD: Federal Minister for Human Rights Dr Shireen Mazari on Sunday said in the wake of the United Nations report on Kashmir, the previous governments of Pakistan had failed to act proactively on the Kashmir issue.

Addressing a one day International Conference on UN Report on Human Rights Violations in Indian Occupied Kashmir in Islamabad, she said the UN report about the Indian atrocities in Jammu and Kashmir had once again highlighted the issue at the international level.

She said Pakistan’s legitimacy in Kashmir conflict was based on UN resolutions, so we should not deviate from those resolutions.

Earlier in her address, Ms Janne Teller, former conflict adviser of UN highlighted the UN General Assembly’s resolution, calling for referendum in Kashmir to determine the future of their governance.

Few days ago, Chairman of All Parties Hurriyat Conference Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who is currently under house arrest, resentfully tweeted, “Nocturnal raids by police on resistance activists and people’s homes in Srinagar city in connection with Human Rights Week! Family members ruthlessly beaten and harassed, activists arrested while others on the run! What state aggression!”

The aggrieved resistance leader continued, “Even peaceful candle light protests against Human Rights abuses a threat to the mighty rulers whose standard response is repression, repression and still more repression!”
