Pakistani senator Krishna Kumari among BBC’s 100 women of 2018

A proud moment for the entire country as the list of 100 influential women of the year 2018, released by BBC, bears the name of Pakistani Senator Krishna Kumari.

According to details, the British broadcasting organization publishes a list of influential personalities annually which also includes Pakistani women. This year, BBC selected 32 years-old Hindu lawmaker Krishna from an underprivileged locality of Pakistan, Thar, for the international honor.

Krishna Kumari, a woman from the bottom of the Hindu caste hierarchy was elected to the Senate for the first time in Pakistan.

The victory of Krishna Kumari Kohli in the Senate election stirred a wave of optimism on social media, as Pakistanis celebrated the rare success for a woman from a marginalised community at the bottom of the Hindu caste hierarchy.

Hailing from Dhana Gam in Nagarparkar, Tharparkar, Krishna was held for three years as bonded labor along with her family by a landlord in Umerkot. They were later set free in a police raid.

Krishna started her primary education from Umerkot district and then continued her education in Mirpurkhas. She was married at the age of 16 and continued her studies to get a MA degree in sociology from the University of Sindh.

She started taking part in social activities in 2005 by organizing different seminars in Tharparkar.
