Court resents Anwar Majeed for skipping sugar mills case hearing

Anwar Majeed

KARACHI: A banking court on Tuesday expressed resentment over absence of Omni Group head, Anwar Majeed, from the court proceedings in the sugar mills case, ARY News reported.

On the onset of the hearing, the court inquired from lawyer and jail officials about Anwar Majeed. “He is admitted to the hospital due to cardiac problem and we have brought the medical certificate,” responded the lawyer.

The court questioned about the doctor who issued medical certificate of Mr. Majeed. “This is the routine certificate which has been forwarded to the court after little changes”, the judge remarked.

Majeed’s lawyer informed the court that his client was suffering from the heart problem. The court observed that every fourth citizen in the country was facing similar health issues, adding that the hospitals now discharge patients within a week after heart surgery.

“The health condition of Mr. Anwar Majeed further deteriorated after he was sent to jail”, his lawyer informed the court.

The judge asked reasons of over a month-long stay of Majeed in the hospital. We do not want any delay into proceedings of the case, he remarked.

Court adjourned the hearing till December 6, and said the accused in the case would be indicted in the next hearing.

A team of Federal Investigation Agency had raided the Omni group’s sugar mill in Khoshki, Badin district, in August this year and seized some documents as an evidence of corruption. On November 17, the Supreme Court had ordered shifting Anwar Majeed and others to Islamabad to conduct ‘independent probe’ in a money laundering case against the business tycoon.

All the three accused including AG Majeed and Hussain Lawai are currently imprisoned in the money laundering case involving Rs35 billion transferred through fake accounts to three local banks.
