
ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Imran Khan said on Monday that we are standing with the victims of 2005 earthquake who lost their beloveds in the disaster.
As today, the catastrophe of October 8, 2005 marks completion of 13 years, the Prime Minister said that intensity and frequency of natural calamities have increased over the time, the government will utilize all resources to contain the destruction resulted by such tragedies.
The disaster management requires a functional mechanism, further the PM said, and a workable global framework is the need of the time to handle natural calamities.
“Pakistan has an institution like National Disaster Management, however, on district level such institutions should be strengthened,” the Premier added.
On October 8, 2005, Azad Kashmir and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were jolted by one of the most horrendous earthquakes of the history which took away the lives of more than 80 thousand people. The tremor and aftershocks turned the entire cities were turned into wreckage. The tragedy left more than 3 million people homeless.
The earthquake with 7.6 rector scale hit the northern part of the country in the morning of October 8. A total of 1450 projects were approved for the rehabilitation work in the effected areas, out of which four thousand projects are still in pending.
