Some politicians, landlords stealing water in Sindh, says Vawda

Faisal Vawda

ISLAMABAD: Water theft in Sindh will not be tolerated at any cost, as some landlords and politicians are using illegal means to irrigate their agricultural lands, warned Federal Minister for Water Resources, Faisal Vawda.

Addressing a presser in the federal capital on Monday, the minister said he will not succumb to any pressure on pretext of 18th Constitutional amendment.

“Construction of the dams is essential for the survival, as water reservoirs are becoming dry, ending with the passage of every single day, said Mr. Vawda, adding that delay in this regard would cause loss of billions to the economy, which was already passing through toughest time of the history.

The minister said, the situation of water resources would have been different, if governments in the past had done ‘something’.

About Dasu Dam, Faisal Vawda said that international firms said the dam could not be completed immediately, “PTI government trying to complete it by 2022”, the minister added.

Federal Minister made it cleare that he has not taken anyone’s name in water theft issue, adding “water is being stolen in Sindh province”.

Warning against injustice to the metropolis, Vawda said on October 15, that he would take serious action, if Karachi was not given its due share of water by the Sindh government.

Talking to the newsmen in Jamshoro, Vawda said Karachi’s share of water is being theft and sold in connivance with tanker mafia.

He said there was water scarcity in Sindh and he would not let injustice happen to the people of Sindh and Karachi. He asked Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah to address the water theft and distribution issues.

The Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader said the Sindh government had failed to deliver. Water worth billions of rupees was being stolen in the province, he said.

He said he would refer a case to the National Accountability Bureau about corruption in dam. He said he would not let the Sindh government waste Rs11 billion for the sake of Rs1.25 billion.
