Saleemi took charge as new IGP Punjab

LAHORE: Amjad Javed Saleemi took charge as inspector general of police (IGP) for Punjab on Monday.

Saleemi had been appointed as the police chief last week but the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) suspended the notification since it came days before Sunday’s by-elections.

According to the ECP rules, government is not allowed to make new appointments or transfer any government official before elections.

On his arrival at the IG Police office in Lahore today, he was presented guard of honour.

Outgoing I.G. Police Punjab Mohammad Tahir, who was replaced by Saleemi, was absent from the charge taking ceremony against the department’s custom. However, another former police chief of the province and incumbent Sindh Police chief, Kaleem Imam was present in the ceremony.

Saleemi was previously serving as the commandant of National Police Academy. Before that he held the office of Sindh Police chief during the interim setup for recently held General Elections.

New police chief of Punjab, talking on the occasion said that “the former I.G. Police is a good officer and he is like my younger brother”.
