ISLAMABAD: Abdul Razzaq Dawood, the Adviser to Prime Minister on Commerce and Textiles declared on Wednesday that government has aimed for production of 15 million cotton bales for the year 2018-2019, in comparison to the present production as 10.8 million cotton bales.
During his address in a press conference at the Ministry of Commerce and Textile, he stated that government’s main concern is to make sure that the cotton imported is of superior quality, also to provide best quality seeds & pesticides to the farmers in order to boost their yield per acre.
He said, “We are starting a campaign for ‘Contamination free cotton’ to perk up the excellence of local cotton and to develop export quality cotton in order to augment revenue through exports.”
He further added that, textile is considered as the back bone of the country’s economy as it contributes almost 60% of country’s exports, but in present the trade of textiles had turned down.
According to him, the reason behind for low trade & decline in textile segment, is due to low quality seeds, pesticides and no use of latest technology in textiles are main causes.
He added that upcoming visit to China, “We would get sustainability in agriculture, counting Basmati rice and fruits.”
He said, “We really need the market surplus from China, European Union, America, Japan and other southeast and pacific countries for amplification of exports of Pakistan.”
He also added, “China is prepared to present us duty free excess in its market through Free Trade Agreement in Phase-II. Also, now China has decided to diminish the tariff on 70 items to give market excess to Pakistan.”
“We would discuss with Japan and Canada to get market duty free excess for boosting our exports, “he said.
In regional trade, we are behind Vietnam, Bangladesh and India as our trade contribution is very low.
The government is likely to consult with all stakeholders, in order to provide five year plan for textile industry to develop long, medium and short term goals.
He also remarked, “Our focal point will be to encourage “MADE IN PAKISTAN” goods and to deject imports.”
